ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY
General Attendance Guidelines
- Students are expected to attend at least 90 percent of class sessions in a semester to receive credit.
Loss of credit may occur if the student is absent more than nine (9) days in a semester.
- This does not include absences due to school-approved activities, such as field trips, performing groups,
student government, etc.
- A habitually truant child is a child between ages six and sixteen who has 5 days of unexcused absences
within a single school year (A.R.S. 15-803). Students under the age of sixteen who are in violation of
the state truancy law will be referred to the school law enforcement officer.
Coronado’s Attendance Policy
- Students with four (4) unexcused absences in any class may be dropped from that class with loss of credit.
- Students with ten (10) excused absences may be required to provide medical documentation to remain in
class and excuse any further absences. If additional absences occur, and no medical documentation is
provided, the student may be dropped from class(es).
- Students with excessive absences of ten (10) (excused and/or unexcused) may be dropped from class on
the 11th absence.
Procedures for Excusing an Absence
It is the obligation of the parent of an absent student to contact the Attendance Office prior to or on the actual day of the absence. If no contact is made to the school within 24 hours, the absence will be considered unexcused.
Students Late for Class
- Tardy is defined as arriving after the start of the regular school day or class period, at the assigned location
ready for classroom activity. Tardiness, whether excused or not, affects a student's ability to do well in
the class. - In order to minimize class interruptions and to assure students do not miss valuable instruction time, students
who arrive late for school will be sent to the Time Management Room (TMR). Reasonable excuses for being
late to first hour include scheduled appointments or unforeseen emergencies and must be called in to the
Attendance Office before the student’s arrival to school, or the parent/guardian must accompany the student
to the Attendance Office, to sign in and receive an excused pass. - Any tardy student in hallways or around campus must go directly to TMR.
- TMR does not postpone any assignment deadlines. Unless the assignment is turned in on the same day, it will
be considered LATE. - Students are responsible for contacting teachers about any assignment given during TMR absence.
- Students who have excessive tardies (excused or unexcused) will be subject to disciplinary action.
Tardy Consequences
Tardy #1 – 3 ..................................................................................................... Teacher discretion
Tardy #4 ................................... 1-day lunch discipline and parent contact by administrator
Tardy #5 - 6 ................................... 3-day lunch discipline and parent contact by administrator
Tardy #7 - 8 ................................... 5-day lunch discipline and parent contact by administrator
Tardy #9 ......................... 1-day in-school suspension and parent contact by administrator
Tardy #10 ......................... 2-day in-school suspension and parent contact by administrator
Tardy #11 ................................................................................... Drop from class/loss of credit
Tardy policy will be initiated with teacher referral or as soon as tardies come to the attention of administration. Implementation of discipline will be determined by administration.
Leaving Campus
Parents are expected to call in advance prior to a student leaving campus for any reason. Students cannot leave campus during lunch without a parent coming into the Attendance Office and signing them out. Parents are the only authorized person(s) to take a student during the lunch period. There are no exceptions without administrative approval.
For further information, please see the Uniform Code of Student Conduct – Attendance Regulations.
